My fascination about athletic performance and science of sports began just after I started my first martial arts class in 1995. Like most of us I wanted to train until I got my black belt and feel invincible. The journey to attaining it was tougher than just having it around my waist. As one of my instructor's once said to me that, 'getting to a black belt stage is just the preface, self realisation and the first chapter of your training begins after attaining your black belt. ' I am great believer in setting your mind for achievement and rather than having a coloured belt around my waist. I realised this after few years of practicing and coaching martial arts. Personally ranks/tags on your belt signify your experience and level of required standard in any organisation similar to police officers and army. It is a great way to motivate people towards their goals. I also see it as a reward of hard work. I have had great opportunities to train with real good instructors from different martial arts backgrounds and life experiences. From Choi-Kwang do, judo, Aikido, Silat, Ba Gua, Jiu Jitsu to officer safety training with Metropolitan police and ex-military personnel. From these experiences I have devised my own style of teaching under the sho-nav kan health system. I teach at local schools and also to my regular private clients as part of the sho-nav kan health and fitness programme. The movements are performed sequentially in order to generate maximum impact and graceful movements in order to evade any immanent threat/attack. Like everything in life, once the basic foundation is achieved and strengthened, long and close range attack/defence drills are implemented. I truly believe that in any martial arts, the adaptation of basic movements are core to training and in most situations, if you are calm, you can get away with applying these basic techniques rather than using complicated and fancy movements. If you are interested in acquiring these skills either on one to one or in small groups please feel free to contact me. |
